New York Holidays [Public & Federal]
New York Holidays [Public & Federal]
Although the State of New York celebrates all federal holidays, there are some unique holidays in the state as well. On these days, all state offices are closed. Two unique holidays celebrated in New York include Confederate Memorial Day, celebrated on the fourth Monday in April, and Jefferson Davis’ birthday, celebrated on the first Monday in June.
The state also recognizes Robert E. Lee’s birthday on the same day as Martin Luther King Jr.’s on the third Monday in January as well as the birthday of Thomas Jefferson the same day as George Washington on the third Monday in February. In addition, the second Monday in October, celebrated as Columbus Day for most of the country, is also recognized as Fraternal Day and American Indian Heritage Day.
Mardi Gras is celebrated in Mobile and Baldwin Counties with all state and county offices closed on that day. State employees who live outside these two counties are provided one additional personal day per year in lieu of paid time off on Mardi Gras.
