The history of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole reveals that he was born in 1871 in a Hawaiian family. He became the prince of the Kingdom of Hawaii. In 1895, the monarchy got toppled as Prince Kuhio participated in a revolt against the Republic of Hawaii. Subsequently, he was imprisoned for a year. Later, he got elected as a delegate of the US Congress by representing from the Territory of Hawaii.  

He contributed towards the creation of modern Hawaii through reforms. He held notable key positions in the Government of Hawaii. In the promotion of the Hawaii Statehood Act, his involvement was excellent. Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day, also Called as Prince Kuhio Day, is a state holiday in the US. It is celebrated in March by honouring the Prince Kuhio for his commendable leadership, in the history of Hawaii.

It is a month-long festival exhibiting the cultural practices of Hawaii, traditions and customs.  The important feature of this festival is canoe races held state-wide.
